Our Story

Created out of a mutual love of cycling and the city’s independent beer scene, Newtown Park Cycle Club was founded in 2022 by David McMillan, James Diggle and Michael McKelveny, out of the sadly now defunct, Newtown Park Brewery in East Bristol.

Thanks to the groundwork laid by clubs like Das Rad Club, and brewery-based Left Handed Giant Run Club, NPCC was set up in the wake of the Covid Lockdowns, as an alternative space for those who didn’t feel at home in traditional cycling clubs.

Starting with 13 riders on our first Sunday Social, the club has grown in both numbers, and its weekly ride schedule. Thanks to volunteers and club members such as Wiesia Kuczaj and Hari Milburn, we have our weekly Hills and Gravel rides respectively, as well as introducing hundreds of new cyclists to group riding over the years through our Sunday Socials.

The social side of cycling has always been at the core of our club. Whether you are new to cycling, group riding, or the city itself, we recognise the importance of creating opportunities to meet new people, build up confidence, and have a laugh together. And that the time spent in cafes and taprooms before and after a ride are just as important to building a strong, friendly cycling community, as the conversations we have on the bike.

No memberships, no egos. just good times on bikes.

“Newtown Park is a snapshot of what the cycling community should look like.”
